Penguin Updates - 12 Steps Still Works BUT...

Postby admin » Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:06 am

I'm currently working on adding some new additional material to the Blogging Underground 12 step training that expands on some old theories that still are important, plus some new tricks we have been discovering that helps sites get on top fast and stay there.

I'll explain more soon - but for now let me just drop a few general concepts on you that are important.

OK - so Panda and Penguin have come around and there has been a big flurry of activity and a lot of people got hit and gave up.

That's good for us.

People passed around garbage info and false rumors and many who heard it panicked and acted silly and created a frenzy that is typical of the Warrior Forum.

You know - people say mean things and act irrational and people spread the garbage as if it's all true and it just gets really crazy.

Well - fortunately with time the screaming idiots have pretty much shut up and those of us that are doing things are finding that things are actually working as good as ever. Maybe even better. 8-)

Now that things have settled and a lot of sites are gone there are actually MORE opportunities and things are easier than they were before. Less links get you on top right now.

I know that's hard to believe because just a few months ago people were crying and screaming and making ridiculous claims about how Google was out to kill SEO and anyone that did anything that Google didn't like would be in big trouble.

Sure - they still don't like people who do stuff to get top rankings - they never did - but other than them deleting a bunch of sites and cleaning out an AWFUL LOT of that WEB SPAM CRAP what really has changed???

Well - it's clear they want quality and that occasionally they will look at sites to see if they are good or garbage.

Also - it appears they have an algo that flags certain factors on site and off site and will put a site in a queue for human review.

So - some things people who are often in a hurry will do can get a site flagged for review. Also a lack of attention to quality, grammer, excessive duplication, obvious spinning etc. may make it more likely for a site to be reviewed by a human and potentially rejected as being worth keeping in their index.

Like it or not - more than ever - quality is the key to staying in the game and getting on top.

A lot of the evil spammer types just don't want to do any extra work - so a lot of them are already gone and not doing any new stuff.

Unfortunately - a lot of good decent people with good sites were also hit when this Panda Penguin thing happened.

Yes - we got hit too and a lot of good people got hit - but it's easy to get back on top - especially with new sites.

There are reports that some of the SPAMMER TYPES out there lost 1,000's of domains that were removed from Google.... Can you imagine losing that many sites?

I can't believe all of those 1,000 domains one person would have could be good web sites.

I bet a lot of those people who lost massive amounts of sites were doing spammy stuff with low value... you know, auto blog and spun robotic crap publishing - a lot of them are now GONE.

I'm not judging what people do - I'm not saying those things are bad - but we do know Google doesn't want spammy stuff in their index.

So the days of stealing content, publishing garbage, spinning crap and using the articles from abused ezinarticles type directories - just like 1,000's of other web sites has passed.

So - those sites are now out of the index. Some say a million domains had been de-indexed. It was a lot whatever the exact number was.

That means the LINKS are now gone... backlinks from good sites and bad that were deindexed are gone. Those gigantic spun crap link networks and other spammy sites are no longer pointing to sites - a lot of sites - all across the board - but that's actually a good thing.

Those of us building new sites and also sites that replace the links that were lost are getting back on top pretty easy.

What's New

So what has changed and what will the new Blogging Underground training additions be covering?

The one thing that seems to be clear is DIVERSITY IS VERY IMPORTANT.

IF you have LOTS of links out there pointing at your sites it is more important than ever that there are diverse signals and you don't do too much of the same thing like a robot.

The one thing that has NOT changed is that PATTERNS CAN KILL YOU

Variation of Link Text - who knows the ideal percentages but just don't hammer anything over and over

IP diversity - links from sites on servers all over the world

Social signals - you need at least a few coming in to your sites! In particlular Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc.

We need to do some of the stuff that people with blogs and websites are doing.

What do regular people with sites do to spread their word?

They do tweets and post on Facebook and other social places. If there are NO social signals something is wrong.

3. Links from Directories - People SUBMIT stuff - of course it's never good to BLAST anything and do stuff that reveals paterns or looks like automation, but face it - a site with ZERO directory listings or ZERO articles on popular directories or sites that have NO comments on any other blogs or forums is UNUSUAL.

Google expects some of these things.

Maybe not 1,000's of these things blasted out with patterns - but at least a few of these factors should be present! :P

Also - you also need to make sure that some of the LINKS pointing at your pages ALSO have links pointing at them. You know "backlink your BU backlinks!"

I've been saying that for a while.

The links will be more effective if they have VOTES TOO! Links that have links pointing at them will count for more than a link that doesn't.

So bookmark your links - tweet them and post on other sites. It will help you!

What's on your page counts more than ever

4. On page factors - Face it - they do have human reviewers - websites need to look reasonably good and have stuff that makes people stay longer. Pictures, videos etc.

If it looks like nothing more than a link farm, has nothing original or has no value - it might be deleted.

There will be a lot more in the training additions but that will give you a basic idea of what I'll be covering.

Almost all of the 12 Step Success Strategy Training still applies - you just need to do a little more of the extra stuff that adds value, social signals and quality factors to your sites to stay on top.

The key is to do a little extra here and there just like people with sites do in the real world and not act like a robot. :P

Hi Mike,

I really get a buzz out of reading your posts as it makes me aware of what I am NOT doing.

I am not a 'social' marketer and haven't even got a Facebook or Twitter account...it is something I had hoped I would never have to get involved with.

I had hoped great content and a few backlinks would 'make' it happen. So far it hasn't...but on-wards and upwards :)

If someone can direct me to some information on how to create a Facebook Fan page and how Tumblr works, I would appreciate it :)

I am glad I didn't spend a lot of money on directory blasts before. :) but instead I took the time and built my links the old fashioned way or as a real human would do it... ;)

Really? I'm still building sites with NO SOCIAL LINKS and they still rank on top. It's more of an insurance policy than anything.

If you researched your keywords you shouldn't need to do too much extra.

That said - for my most important sites I will ALWAYS use Twitter and Facebook because that's what the big boys do out there.

It's also similar to the announcing we do in our blogs - it's just to a big social site :D

Directory links are good - as long as they're not done in big reptitive robotic blasts :;">

A lot of people shy away from a lot of great links because they think spammers only do them - but regular people too go to directories and submit pages and articles etc. :)

As for Tumblr - it's relatively easy - just get an account and start creating a few blogs on subjects you like. You'll get the hang of it very quickly and as you build sites add new blogs for those topics and use them to link out once in aa while when relevant.

Here is something I worte on Tumblr blogs at Quora

See the blog post on tumblr

It's great to have a couple of accounts instead of just one - that way you can be secure knowing you won't get your hard work deleted - however Tumblr seems much better than Wordpress as far as being marketing friendly :)

Hi Mike,

What directories do you recommend for article submission?

Search and find directories for your keywords - look for "add url" or "submit site" with your keyword and then look at the site - if it has a lot of inside pages indexed it should be worth submitting to.

Some of the paid ones that help boost a site are

http://www.hotvsnot.com/

http://botw.org/

As long as the directory is indexed it should be fine. Just don't do too many at one time. spread em out if possible. Keep a list of the ones that are easiest and fastest so you can use again.

Also - since we need diversity in link types it's ok to submit to dofollow and nofollow and reciprocal links are ok to - howver the NON reciprocal links are best (1 way links).
